Total Revenue Earnings of Anti-Gay Groups

Box Turtle Bulletin has an interesting post today calling Focus On The Family hypocritical for their bleatings about how "incredibly well-funded" the Human Rights Campaign is. After reading this, I was curious about how "well-funded" other prominent anti-gay groups are and the following are the results I found from GuideStar. The dollar amounts below are the total revenue earnings each group received in the last year GuideStar has record of. Click the link for each to see the IRS tax form for more information.

  • Alliance Defense Fund, Inc. - $26,095,319
  • American Center for Law & Justice - $10,433,897
  • American Family Association - $32,165,821
  • American Vision, Inc. - $1,229,351
  • Center for Military Readiness - $305,204
  • Christian Coalition of America, Inc. - $1,408,747
  • Concerned Women for America - $10, 640,810
  • Coral Ridge Ministries Media, Inc. - $38,851,138
  • Exodus International North America, Inc. - $1,110,870
  • Family Research Council, Inc. - $10,858,374
  • Liberty Counsel, Inc. - $1,371,795
  • National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, Inc. - $211,895
  • Parents & Friends of Ex-Gays, Inc. - $26,659
  • Traditional Values Coalition - $5,689,807
  • Young America’s Foundation - $18,571,331

It appears that political advocacy nets big bucks. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that many "pro-gay" groups also have a good revenue stream. I was rather surprised at how low the revenue generated for NARTH, PFOX and CMR actually was given the amount of pulicity they usually get in the press. Whomever is in charge of their media campaigns is doing a superb job, unfortunately, by getting the most bang for their buck far in excess of the dollar value of them. Interesting findings.

UPDATE: What the heck, I have some time so in the interest of fairness here are the latest available revenue figures for prominent pro-gay groups I'm familiar with (see Box Turtle Bulletin for the numbers on HRC):

  • Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Inc. - $7,699,461
  • Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. - $10,440,231
  • Log Cabin Republicans - $960,376
  • National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, Inc. - $459,402
  • National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Foundation - $9,174,574
  • National Stonewall Democrats - $354,346
  • Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc. - $1,831,056
  • Servicemembers Legal Defense Network - $1,896,154

UPDATE: I forgot to post the total revenue earnings for three other prominent pro-gay groups:

  • American Civil Liberties Union Foundation - $58,365,374
  • Americans United for the Separation of Church & State - $7,556,202
  • People for the American Way Foundation - $13,237,782

While I'm at it, I'd better post at least one of the 2 major veterans groups. I couldn't find the information on the national office of the American Legion, so that one I'm leaving off for now. Posting these may seem controversial, but as much respect as I have for these groups and their members on other matters they aren't exactly "gay-friendly" and work strongly to keep DADT in place.

  • Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States - $75,494,228

If anyone thinks of other prominent groups from either end of the spectrum, let me know and I'll add them to the list here.

UPDATE: I can't believe I forgot this one, but it's a great gay Christian ministry...

  • Gay Christian Network - $64,393
